You're gonna wanna stretch and hydrate before you open this one

Imagine a life without art or creativity? What a snooze. Below is a far from fully comprehensive list of art, artists, and creatives we love and admire. We have definitely forgotten people and it will 100% wake us up in the night consider it an amuse bouche. A taste.

Share, share, share, the art you love and the creative work that moves you loudly and proudly and definitely share it with us.

xoxo,

A+N

A buffet if you will of things that make our creative hearts sing:

Slow Aeolian living but make it gorgeous

Anything artist Nick Cave does, but especially this and this.

People who make you feel like you are there with them, here or there.

An unlikely source of art but Mike Tyson’s solo show that you can now watch on HBO was one of the most powerful things Anna’s ever seen irl and she definitely wasn’t expecting it. Art can come from anywhere and anyone. Not commenting on who he is as a person but his performance was incredible.

Does age have anything to do with art? Can a 5th grader be a genius?

Ana Mendieta. The new podcast about Ana Mendieta by curator Helen Molesworth is very good and worth a listen.

Bjork has a podcast.

Strangers Lea Thau’s podcast has always felt like audio art. This piece by Annie McEwen’s on heartbreak Here I am and Here be Danger is beautiful, moving and haunting.

Basquiat being exhibited by his family, or walking a runway.

Something we did not really get into during the episode but has to be said is the institutional racism in the art world. The lack of representation across all aspects of the art is mind boggling but not surprising. Chaédria LaBouvier the first Black guest curator, author of a show catalogue and first Black full time curator at the Guggenheim in 2019 (yes for real 2019 it took them THAT long to have a full time Black curator) and described it as “the most racist professional experience of her life.” A field that is VERY reluctant to look at itself and how race and politics are at play is the art and creative world.

Solange + ballet feels like magic

We talk a lot about Huê being an artist but have you seen his work???

We love Olwen + Giselle as people who can help you connect with creativity in a different way.

Mediation + Creativity = Jessica Snow

There’s probably a word in German for when an artist you love takes a risk and does something very different from their usual body of work and you love it, this EP Moonface made feels like that. It also has marimbas in it so just genius all around.

Lizzo…someone working to innovate in a very established category (pop music) and doing so with joy and unbelievable talent. Her speaking to why she made some of the decisions she made while eating vegan wings is a gift.

Anything Tessa makes.

We didn’t even really get into food but two people who feel like they’re marrying art and food to us are: Stephen Satterfield and Julia Sherman.

Ancient Egyptian jewelry, imagine being able to make this?

We barely touched fashion, writing and music but really it was because we were thinking of you. If we got into it we’d be here all day.

There is so much art, talent and creativity in this world that continues to enrich our lives all the time. If you have something you want to make and put out in the world we hope you do.

Art is for everyone. Creativity is possible for anyone.

Show Notes:

The spectrum of art and creativity reaches every corner of our lives. The music that we listen to, the shows that we watch, and the way we decorate our spaces are all forms of artistic expression. So, why is there so much pressure to abandon your creative side and return to ‘the real world’?

There’s often an immense push to grow out of creativity in order to make money. Anna and Nina challenge the idea that if you choose a creative career or lifestyle that you're destined to struggle financially. Nina explores how this concept has shown up in her marriage, as Huê is a working artist. She emphasizes how important it is to honor what’s going to help you show up as a full person.

Anna and Nina also dig into their experiences with fine art. They talk about the expectation that exists to feel or react a certain way to fine art. They also talk about gatekeeping in the industry and where that might come from. Plus, they touch on why it’s important to protect the sacredness of sharing your art and emotions with others, especially online.
